Today I’m grateful for:

  • New beginnings.
  • Moving forward.
  • Choosing happiness.

When I started my original blog more than two and a half years ago, I did it for entirely personal reasons, even though I chose to do in a public space. If other people read and responded to it, cool, but that wasn’t the goal.

When I first started blogging, there were speed bumps on virtually every road in my life. And not just the low, flat speed bumps that you see coming with plenty of time to slow down and glide easily over. There were also more than a few of the tall, sharp speed bumps that come out of nowhere and ruin the undercarriage of your car, resulting in a costly trip to the mechanic.

These speed bumps all came within a matter of just a few months, and by November of 2008, I was at the point where many moments, I didn’t even want to get on the road.

Yet, deep down, I still knew that I had reasons to be grateful, even on the crappiest of days. I just needed to find a way to focus on those, instead of the bumps.

So the goal was: Suck it up. It can always be worse. Find something to be grateful for every day. In fact, dammit, find three things to be grateful for every day.

I’m not so strict with myself all the time anymore, but back in the early months, I did write at least three things every day that I was grateful for. Sometimes they were small things, sometimes big. It doesn’t really matter. There is always something. That’s what matters.

I’m happy to say that the roads have been a lot smoother recently. There are and always will be speed bumps, hopefully not as many as were clustered back in 2008, but if so, I know that I’ll spend a little more time here, reminding myself every day of the good things, and it won’t fix everything, but I firmly believe from experience that it will help me navigate the speed bumps with a little less road rage and a little less long-term damage.

Holy analogy, Batman.

Cheers!
